Studio vs. Outdoor Family Photos: Which Is Right for Your Family?

So, you've finally decided it's time to update those family pictures. Good for you! Now comes the next question.

Are we taking these pictures in the studio or outside?

And before you start stressing over which one is better, let me tell you something. There really isn't a wrong answer.

As a family photographer in Burleson, TX, I photograph families both in my studio and at beautiful outdoor locations around Mansfield, Arlington, and the Fort Worth area. I love both for different reasons.

But what works beautifully for one family might not be the best choice for another. And that's okay!

Let's talk about a few things that might help you decide.

Studio Family Photos: No Weather Worries and No Distractions

Now, let me tell you one of my favorite things about studio photography.

We don't have to worry about this Texas weather!

Because you know how it is around here. It can be beautiful one minute, and the next minute the wind is blowing everybody's hair in three different directions.

And don't even get me started on trying to take family pictures outside in August. Whew!

In my Burleson photography studio, we've got air conditioning, controlled lighting, and a comfortable space where we can focus on your family.

I especially love studio sessions for families who want those classic, timeless portraits. You know the ones. Everybody looks beautiful, the background isn't competing for attention, and the photographs will look just as good hanging on your wall ten years from now.

But here's something I want you to know.

Studio portraits do NOT have to be stiff and boring.

We're going to get those beautiful pictures of everybody looking at the camera, of course. But we're also going to laugh, snuggle up, and have a little fun.

Because I want to photograph your family, not a bunch of people pretending they don't know each other!

Outdoor Family Photos: A Little Sunshine and Room to Move

Now, if your family enjoys being outdoors, we have some beautiful places around Burleson, Mansfield, Arlington, and Cedar Hill for family photos.

I love outdoor sessions because we can walk around, change backgrounds, and let everybody move a little.

And sometimes those moments between the poses turn out to be some of my favorites.

Maybe it's Dad making everybody laugh. Maybe it's your little one reaching for your hand. Or maybe it's that moment when everybody forgets I'm standing there with a camera.

Those are the moments I love.

Outdoor family photography also gives us beautiful natural light, especially during that time just before sunset.

But here's the catch.

Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate with our plans.

We have to consider the weather, the time of year, and when the light will be best. And yes, sometimes that means scheduling around sunset instead of choosing just any time of day.

But don't worry about figuring all that out. That's my job!

I'll help you choose a location and time that will work well for your family.

What Kind of Family Portraits Do You Want?

Here's something I like to ask families when we're planning their session.

How do you want your family photographs to feel?

Are you drawn to those classic portraits where your family is the center of attention, without a lot going on in the background?

Or do you love photographs surrounded by trees, beautiful sunlight, and the colors of the season?

Neither style is better than the other. They're simply different.

And here's something else to think about. Where will these photographs live?

If you're dreaming of a large family portrait hanging above your fireplace, we might choose a studio background that complements the colors in your home.

If you love the idea of a collection of outdoor photographs displayed together, we can plan a session with that in mind, too.

That's one of the reasons I spend time getting to know my clients before we ever pick up the camera.

I don't want you to simply have a bunch of pretty pictures. I want you to have portraits you'll actually enjoy seeing every day.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Well, that depends on your family!

If you love clean backgrounds, classic portraits, and a comfortable environment without weather worries, a studio family photography session might be exactly what you're looking for.

If you love natural scenery, warm sunlight, and a little more room to explore, an outdoor family session might be your favorite.

But here's what I really want you to know.

You don't have to make this decision alone.

During our planning consultation, we'll talk about your family, the style of portraits you love, and where you plan to display them in your home.

I'll help you decide which setting makes the most sense.

Because whether we're in my Burleson studio or outside at a beautiful park in Mansfield, my goal isn't simply to take a pretty picture.

I want you to have photographs of the people you love, just as they are in this season of life.

The little ones won't stay little. Those teenagers will be grown before you know it. And one day, these ordinary moments are going to mean more than you ever imagined.

So don't let deciding between a studio and an outdoor session be the thing that keeps you from getting those family pictures taken.

Let's get them done!
