What to Wear for Fall Family Photos (Without Stressing Yourself Out!)

You've finally decided it's time for updated family pictures. You've picked a date, found your photographer, and now comes the question that can send a mama straight into a tailspin.

What in the world is everybody going to wear?!

Listen, I get it!

You're trying to find something that looks good on everybody, works with the weather, and doesn't require buying an entirely new wardrobe.

And let's not forget that somebody in the family is probably going to have an opinion about what you've picked out!

But here's the good news. Choosing outfits for your fall family photos doesn't have to be complicated.

As a family photographer serving Mansfield, Burleson, Arlington, and the surrounding Fort Worth area, I've helped plenty of families prepare for their sessions.

Here are a few of my favorite tips to make choosing your outfits a whole lot easier.

1. Start With Mama!

Yes, YOU!

Before you start pulling clothes out of everybody else's closets, find something that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable.

I see it happen all the time. Mama spends so much energy getting everybody else ready that she ends up throwing on whatever she can find at the last minute.

We're not doing that!

Choose something you love wearing, whether that's a beautiful dress, a pair of flattering jeans with a nice blouse, or something a little dressier.

Once you've chosen your outfit, use those colors to help coordinate the rest of the family.

And please, make sure you can move comfortably. We'll be standing, sitting, walking, and probably doing a little snuggling during your session.

You want to feel good in what you're wearing!

2. Coordinate Your Colors Instead of Matching

Remember when everybody wore white shirts and blue jeans for family pictures?

Now, there's nothing wrong with that look if it's what you love. But you certainly don't have to dress everybody alike to create beautiful family portraits.

Instead, choose two or three complementary colors and build your outfits around them.

Beautiful Colors for Fall Family Photos

Some of my favorite fall combinations include:

  • Cream, camel, and olive green

  • Rust, navy, and warm beige

  • Burgundy, blush, and cream

  • Chocolate brown, tan, and soft blue

  • Mustard, cream, and denim

And don't feel like you have to wear orange, brown, or burgundy just because it's fall!

Soft neutrals, blues, and muted greens photograph beautifully outdoors, too.

The goal is to create a coordinated look where everyone complements each other without looking identical.

3. Be Careful With Busy Patterns

Now, I'm not saying everybody has to wear solid colors.

I love a pretty floral dress or a subtle plaid shirt!

But when everybody shows up wearing a different pattern, things can start looking a little busy.

Here's an easy way to handle it.

Choose one outfit with a pattern you love, then pull colors from that pattern for the other family members.

For example, if Mama is wearing a floral dress with cream, rust, and navy, Dad might wear a navy shirt, while the kids wear cream and rust.

See how easy that is?

A little pattern adds interest. Too many patterns can compete for attention.

And we want the focus to be on your beautiful family, not everybody's clothes!

4. Don't Forget About Texture

One of my favorite ways to add interest to fall family photographs is through texture.

Think cozy sweaters, denim jackets, soft knits, corduroy, and flowing dresses.

Different textures add dimension to your photographs, especially when you're working with a simple color palette.

For example, a cream sweater paired with denim looks beautiful next to an olive green dress or a camel-colored jacket.

You don't need a bunch of accessories or complicated outfits.

Sometimes the simplest combinations photograph the best.

5. Comfortable Kids Are Happy Kids

Let me tell you something.

If your child is wearing an itchy sweater, shoes that pinch, or pants that keep falling down, we're all going to hear about it! 😂

And honestly, I don't blame them.

When choosing clothes for your children, think about how they'll move and play.

Can they sit comfortably? Can they walk without constantly adjusting their clothes? Are their shoes appropriate for an outdoor location?

For little girls wearing dresses, consider shorts or leggings underneath if needed.

And for the little boys, make sure those shirts and pants fit properly.

You want them to look nice, but you also want them to feel like themselves.

Because when children are comfortable, it's much easier to capture those natural expressions and sweet moments.

6. Think About Your Location

Where you're taking your family photographs matters when choosing what to wear.

For outdoor family photography in Mansfield, TX, locations like Elmer Oliver Nature Park offer beautiful natural backgrounds with trees, open spaces, and warm earthy tones.

Colors such as cream, rust, olive green, navy, and camel work beautifully in these settings.

But you also want to think about the terrain.

If we're walking through grass or along a natural trail, those brand-new stilettos might not be your best choice!

And since we're in Texas, let's be honest. October weather can be a little unpredictable.

You might need a sweater in the morning and short sleeves by the afternoon!

Check the forecast before your session and choose clothing that makes sense for the temperature.

7. Think About Where Your Photographs Will Live

Here's something families don't always consider when choosing their outfits.

Where will you display your photographs?

If you're planning to hang a beautiful family portrait in your living room, think about the colors already in that space.

You don't have to match your home decor exactly, but choosing colors that complement your home can help your portraits look beautiful on your walls for years to come.

And if you're planning to create an album, coordinating outfits can help give your collection of photographs a timeless, cohesive look.

After all, these photographs deserve to be enjoyed somewhere other than your phone!

You Don't Have to Figure It All Out Alone

Here's what I really want you to remember.

Your family photographs aren't about having the perfect outfits.

They're about capturing the people you love, just as they are in this season of life.

The clothes should complement your family, not steal the show.

And when you book a family photography session with Charlotte Kindred Photography, wardrobe guidance is part of the experience.

I'll help you think through colors, outfit combinations, and the overall look you're hoping to achieve.

Because the last thing I want is for you to show up stressed before we've even taken the first photograph!

So take a little pressure off yourself, Mama.

We'll figure out the outfits together.
